What is obesity?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Obesity is a condition characterized by an excessive accumulation of body fat causing an increase in the weight<\/a>, or more properly of your body mass<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0body weight<\/strong>\u00a0is the result of the balance between incomes (food) and expenditures (exercise). If we intake along with the food more energy than the one our body need as daily requirements, it accumulates as fat and lets your body weight increase beyond acceptable values causing an\u00a0overweight<\/strong> or a real obesity.<\/p>\n

Apart from the weight, in general, also the so-called \u201cbelly\u201d has its significance: visceral obesity, in fact, is as important as the increase of the body weight.<\/p>\n

Obesity in figures<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Approximately 10-15% of the world population (400 million adults) is obese<\/u>, with a higher occurrence among women in comparison with men. Obesity is more common in the industrialized countries (e.g. United States, Australia and Canada) and in urban areas, increasing with the age.<\/p>\n

The excessive body weight is connected with several pathologies, namely with\u00a0cardiovascular disease<\/a>,\u00a0type 2 diabetes mellitus<\/u><\/a>, obstructive\u00a0sleep apneas<\/a>\u00a0syndrome, with some cancer forms and with the osteoarthrosis.<\/p>\n

Obesity causes approximately 1 million deaths per year in Europe and 365 thousand in the United States. On average,\u00a0obesity lowers life expectancy by approximately 6-7 years<\/u>.<\/p>\n

Obesity derives from the combination of\u00a0excessive caloric intake<\/strong> and of\u00a0reluctance to exercise<\/strong>, i.e. it is connected with a \u00a0<\/strong>unhealthy lifestyle<\/a>. Anyway there are cases in which obesity has genetic causes or is a consequence of other conditions or diseases or of the use of medicines.<\/p>\n
