Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease<\/strong>\u00a0(COPD) and asthma\u00a0<\/strong>are the most common\u00a0chronic<\/strong> lung diseases<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

We are dealing with pathologies causing an obstruction of the airways flow<\/strong>. The obstruction is progressive over time and persistent in case of COPD while it is reversible with the due treatment for asthma.<\/p>\n

COPD is a typical adult\u2019s disease, and asthma is a common condition for young people.<\/p>\n

COPD and asthma in figures<\/strong><\/h2>\n

COPD affects up to 20% of adult people over 40<\/u>, but its arising becomes higher along with the age,\u00a0particularly for smokers<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In the world 210 million people suffer from COPD, while asthma affects 300 million individuals. COPD has a much higher death rate than asthma<\/u>: 3 million deaths a year against 250 thousand deaths due to asthma.<\/p>\n

Due to the global pollution<\/strong>, COPD is nowadays the fourth cause of death in the world. Anyway, according to the last estimations it will become within 2030 the third cause of death, after\u00a0cardiovascular diseases<\/a> and cancers.<\/p>\n

A non-treated COPD causes\u00a0recurring respiratory infections<\/strong> in addition to a respiratory failure with oxygen deficiency to the organs in the long term.<\/p>\n

In COPD the obstruction is only partially reversible with the treatment and is caused by an\u00a0inflammatory process of the lungs,<\/strong>\u00a0as a reaction to the effects of gases or of noxious corpuscular substances (typically the cigarette smoke or environmental pollutants, the notorious PM10).<\/p>\n

Asthma<\/strong>\u00a0on the contrary is an obstructive disease, reversible with the treatment,\u00a0caused by allergic or autoimmune reactions<\/strong>, or by genetic factors (family relationships).<\/div>\n
